FAQ
Will this zine be physical?
Unfortunately, due to the fact that this is intended to be a small scale project and only has a team of two mods, Bird of Prey will not be physical. This is also the same reason why merch is not being offered. We did run an interest check on making the zine physical due to overwhelming enthusiasm, but in the interest of helping this project run as smoothly as possible, our mod team decided to keep Bird of Prey digital-only.
Is this zine for-profit or for-charity?
This is a charity zine! All proceeds will be donated to BirdLife International, which is a global partnership of non-governmental organizations dedicated to the conservation of birds and their habitats.
Are we inviting guest contributors?
As this was initiated as a small project, we will not be inviting guest contributors to this zine. All contributors will be required to go through the application process.
Are ships allowed?
Yes! Our interest check results showed that people are open to having ships as part of the zine, although plenty of people want to enjoy some gen content as well, so we'll make sure to have a balance of romance and friendship!
Are AUs allowed?
Yes! Our interest check results showed that people are interested in AUs of all kinds, so feel free to let your imagination go wild!
How will contributors be compensated?
As this is a charity zine, contributors will not be given monetary compensation, but they will be entitled to a free copy of the zine.
Applications
Clarifications will be added to each section as we receive questions on them
ZINE SPECS
Writers will be required to write one fic with a length of 2.5-3k words.
Artists will be expected to create either a single-page illustration or a 1-3 page comic at 300 DPI in RGB. The page size will be A5.
APPLICATION SPECS
Do we need a portfolio to apply?
No, you do not need a portfolio to apply. Submitting a portfolio will be optional.
How many pieces do we have to submit?
You will be required to submit 3 pieces as samples.
Do our samples have to be Hawks or BnHA related?
Your pieces do not have to contain Hawks, but at least ONE of them must be BnHA related. Please keep in mind that applications with samples that feature Hawks may be preferred over applications without.
Writer Applications
All sample pieces must be 2k-3k words.
Clarification:
We will allow wiggle room of a few hundred words on sample pieces, however, we highly recommend that you stay within the limits set. The word limit is there to ensure that your samples are substantial enough for us to gain a fair impression of your skills, while also not taking up too much time as we go through contributor applications.
Excerpts will be allowed, so long as they are either standalone or can be understood without the context of the larger story.
While excerpts are allowed, we highly recommend that you still submit at least ONE piece that is a one-shot.
Writers will be allowed to submit a portfolio so long as they also submit the three required samples.
Clarification:
We will be accepting pieces of original fiction as samples as long as they are within the required word limit and you have the one required BnHA piece.
Applications will be judged on characterization, grammar and flow, and storytelling.
Artist Applications
We ask that all sample pieces be full color with a background.
Grey scale pieces will be allowed so long as you indicate that in the notes section of the application.
Artists will be allowed to submit a portfolio so long as they also submit the three required samples.
Applications will be judged on anatomy, use of background, style, and composition.
Clarification:
We are happy to accept either a full background or something more simple, so long as you are able to demonstrate that you can effectively use a background.
